When assisting new startup companies I often hear the phrase ”I don’t think we need a shareholders’ agreement, we already discussed how we’re going to deal with things”. Indeed, very often this is the case; the ownership of the company is divided equally, Matt takes care of the sales, Andy handles the coding and Kate is responsible for securing financing. At this phase however a business lawyer’s head is filled with series of “What if” questions. What if Matt transfers to work for the competitor, Kate wants to sell her shares, or if Andy lashes out due to the aforementioned and decides that he wants to sell “his own code” to Google?
Revisions to the Employment Contracts Act, which came into force at the beginning of the year, have brought changes to companies’ day-to-day life.
This year marked the 4th consecutive year that Mäkitalo had the pleasure of participating in Slush as the exclusive partner for legal services. Finally last Thursday and Friday Mäkitalo’s Slush 2016 crew was unleashed – and what a time we had! Slush 2016 was bigger than ever, full of great pitches, speeches, roundtable discussions and obviously interesting one-on-one discussions.
Mäkitalo participated in the 4UNI Solution Competition organized by the Helsinki Think Company as one of the partner organizations.
While the pre-winter weather that briefly visited us in the beginning of November is fading to a distant and somewhat unreal memory, Helsinki is getting ready again to host the biggest and the most fascinating startup event of the year. Due to our great memories from the previous events, Mäkitalo’s team is anxious to participate in SLUSH 2016 as a key partner and the exclusive provider of legal services.
I returned to my earlier working experience among games and animations and participated in the NGS 2016 games and networking event. The event was organized for the fifth time in Kajaani, where the local University of Applied Sciences has a very active and lively gaming society. This is also facilitated by the Kajaani University of Applied Sciences Game artist / Lead artist study program, which focuses commercialization of the games, strengthening innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities. The event allows the students to easily network with each other and with experienced professionals in the game industry.
Mäkitalo took part in Aalto Entrepreneurship Society’s Summer of Startups 2016 as an official partner providing a 2-day workshop for the participants. This year, the nine-week-long accelerator program took in 14 teams and provided them with coaching and mentoring around different areas of expertise.
